iBookBinding Starts Sales of a New Item: Plexiglas Book Cradle

We are glad to offer you a new category of items in our shop: Plexiglas/Acrylic book cradles. At the current moment, we have already added two versions of the cradle in two different sizes, but soon there will be more of them!

This is a project that has been quite long in the making and formerly was a part of the development of our book scanning frames. These products will also be updated with Plexiglas part quite soon, by the way.

There are two types of cradles at the moment: standard book cradle and a book cradle with a flat spine. You may see the difference shown in the photos below:

And here are the same cradles with books on them:

Default versions include cradles for books with pages sizes of around A5 and A4 (15×20 cm / 6″x8″ and 20×30 cm / 8″x12″, respectively.) Opening angles: 90º, 120º, and 150º. Flat spine width 2.5 cm / 1″.

However, as we always try to accommodate all the customers’ needs, these frames are customizable to other angles and sizes.

Soon we are adding more versions of book cradles, including inclined cradles that allow placing a book at an angle so that it would be better positioned for a viewer looking at a display at a museum or a fair. Along with that, we will update our book scanning sets as well.

Major Japanese Washi Paper Exhibition Opens in London

Paper has made it to Europe almost in the end of the Middle Ages, when it had already been known in China for more than a millennium. Traditional washi paper is made from the bark of gampi tree in Japan since the 8th century and is used for almost anything from fashion to furniture, and books, of course.

20th century was marked by Europeans’ rising interest in Japanese traditions, and use of Japanese materials, including washi paper, has increased here dramatically. New exhibition in The Proud Archivist gallery in East London focuses on Mino washi paper and will display fine contemporary uses of the material and traditions of making the Japanese paper.

Printing Women: Three Centuries of Female Printmakers, 1570–1900

An exhibition devoted to female printmakers is open now at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library.

Many outsiders consider bookbinding and printmaking historically to be a man’s craft. Fortunately, modern times show us how many wonderful female artists are there in the world. But that’s also worth knowing there were female printmakers in the early era of the craft — in the late 15th century.

Collection of Henrietta Louisa Koenen was gathered between 1848 and 1861, and consists of many wonderful examples of work of female printers from the 16th to the 19th centuries.

Collection is exhibited for the first time since 1901. The exhibition ends on January 31st, 2016.

3rd Annual Artists' Book Exhibition, Fort WorthIn December 2015, WoCA Projects presents its 3rd Annual Juried Artists’ Books Exhibition at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center (USA). Submission Deadline: Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 at 11:59 p.m.

Artists’ books are not limited to traditional bookbinding forms and conceptual forms are welcome. Exhibition will run December 4-29, 2015. Artist Reception will take place on Friday, December 4th from 6-8:30 p.m.

Awards

One artist will receive a $500 Purchase Award. Their selected work will be added to the University of North Texas Willis Library’s Rare Books Collection.

Fees
